In the editorial cartoon, “Join or Die,” by Benjamin Franklin, we see a snake.  The snake is actually cut up into segments, and the snake is dead.  The snake has been cut up into pieces, and each piece represents a colony or group of colonies.  Basically, what Benjamin Franklin is saying that colonies cannot exist as pieces—the colonies need to be united in order to survive.
