The knowledge that a narrative poem is telling a story may make it easier to understand because it is easier for us to relate to.

Our brain wants to hear stories, so if we forget about the rhythm of the poem for a minute and just read it, trying to figure out what each line means, we can go back and re-read it as a poem with a clearer understanding.
