ElIi gave me a frightened look. I nodded my agreement with Koophuis. She took the wallet and dashed out the door.

Mr. Koophuis locked eyes with me and said, "Miep, you can also leave."

Miep was risking her own life by staying. Miep Gies and her husband helped the Frank family for over two years by bringing them food and news, and keeping them hidden in an attic. She even brought paper so that Anne could write her diary. Based on the context of the story and the excerpt, it can be infered that  she and her husband were indeed heroes despite personal risks.

Miep was an employee of Mr. Frank and she became very closeness with his family. When Nazis attacked, Miep and her husband hid Frank family in a clandestine place and provided them all they needed to survive like food, so they put on risk their lives; even the company to Frank family was illegal at that moment. All the acquaintances of Frank Family helped them to be hidden although the circumstances, for that reason we can call them heroes.
