Clara Barton was born on December 25, 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. In April 1865, Clara began to work as a nurse in the Civil War. Clara was granted permission to deliver medical supplies, which she did for two years. Many people called Clara "The angel of the battle field" because she helped the soldiers get well. She did this by, calming her patients when she held their hand while changing bandages. She cured and cleaned wounds.
After the war in 1881, Clara founded the American Red Cross which she served until her death. She helped people see the need for the Red Cross even in times other than the war. Her thirty-eight room house in Glen Echo, Maryland, served as the headquarters for the American Red Cross
for several years. It became the Clara Barton National Historic Site in 1974.
