And when I had said this my heart beat more firmly.

According to the lines from "The Third Bank of the River" The narrator expresses his wish for his father to stop rowing the boat and claims he will take his place in it. Because so many years had passed the narrator did not expect his father to accept his proposal. So, instead of doing what he said he would do, the narrator fled. Turning the situation into an irony.
