The events leading up Johnny's admonishing Ponyboy to "remember to stay golden" probably preclude Ponyboy's ability to stay golden (stay innocent). Not only had Ponyboy been tortured by the Socs to the point that Johnny killed one of them, Ponyboy watched his best friend die from injuries sustained in a church fire. Most of his innocence was probably lost at that point.
