There are various hangings throughout the film and theater play. Most of the condemned are people who are not regarded as relevant by the village. Because of this, the town doesn't show much concern about these executions. The effect of the compilation of the hangings and town reaction is to show how things change as the film moves on.
There is a turning point in the events of the story after John Proctor and Rebecca Nurse are hanged. These executions are more significant because they are respected people and have a higher position in this society. Also, Proctor refuses to sign a false confession, which will be regarded as a courageous act and will influence people after him.
The people of the town who attend their hanging are visibly upset and it is evident they are affected by their execution. They even look ashamed.
The hangings and the scenes in Act 4 were really great and appreciated but these were regarded as relevant by the village people. They less appraised the hangings of the various theatres or films in the village.
