The theme reflected in the passage is that language is a powerful tool. The speaker states "If you are a Kiowa, you will understand what I am saying, and will speak your name." Because non-Kiowa's were considered enemies of the Kiowa's it was important for someone to identify themselves using the Kiowa's language. Because the person outside didn't identify themselves, it was clear they were an enemy.
