The reason why days can be short and cold in one hemisphere and long and hot in other is because of the rotation of the earth on its axis.

The earth rotates on its axis. There are two axis, one is the Northern hemisphere while the other is the southern hemisphere.

As the Northern hemisphere goes towards the sun, the southern hemisphere would be farer away.

Those in the Southern part that are farther away from the sun would experience colder (winter) and shorter days. While those in the North would experience summer (hot) and long days because they are closer to the sun.
