Van Helmont is known for his experiment on the plants. At his time it was believed that plants take energy from the soil by eating it so he grew the willow seedlings in the pot. he measured the weight of the pot and willow seedlings and used to water it for the next five years. he measured the weight of the soil and willow seedlings after five years and found that the weight of the tree increased but the weight of the soil remained the same.

He concluded that the plant grew because of the supplied water as there was no change in the mass of the soil. His results were partly correct as he was not aware of the process photosynthesis so did not mention the carbon dioxide which increased the mass of the tree.
