Genre, as you might guess from the way it sounds, comes straight from French, a language based on Latin. It's closely related to genus, a word you may have encountered in biology class. A genre is what a book or show falls into. For example, horror movies are categorized in one section. So whenever you want to look for a horror movie, you don’t have to look at any other genre but horror.
