The associative property of addition states that: "no matter which terms you combine first, it will always result in the same answer.
Another way to combine: (-3 + 5) + 8 + (-1) is -3 + (5 + 8) + (-1), for you will still get the same answer
-3 + (5 + 8) + (-1) can be an answer
