I believe the answer is: litigation
Litigation refers to a procedure conducted by two opposing parties in order to solve a certain type of dispute between the two of them. The majority of litigation usually ended up in settlements ourside the court room. If settlements could not be achieved, the case would be determined by voting from juries.
