James Bryce argued that "Great men are not chosen president because the office was understood to be primarily administrative."
James Bryce argued that "great men are not chosen president "because Bryce had that believe that the number of men that has the ability to govern the United States were not enough compared to the European countries. Bryce said that American that has exceptional and extraordinary ability were not into American politics rather many of them has chosen business where they would be more rewarded for their stewardship. Bryce argued further that the system of government such as congressional life and political life didn’t always demonstrate personal distinction.
He believed that in the political system, distinguished men made enemies generally and this could affect them if unintelligent people becomes the president. According to Bryce, the habits of representative government always produce president that are incapable of handling the affairs of the state. Bryce admitted that ordinary American voters are not object to mediocrity; they preferred a sensible candidate, energetic and above all charismatic. American voters sought for candidates that have the capacity to discharge his duty in line with the view of the people.
James Bryce summarized his thought on why incapable hands always won the Presidency and candidates that have exceptional and extraordinary qualities such as Webster, clay and Calhoun were never able to become the president. He concluded by saying the political system cut down the country’s most outstanding men.
