You could use synonyms to make your writing seem less monotonous, so when you have used a particular word that is not integral to the topic frequently, you may want to use a synonym. You could also use a synonym with a different connotation (the feeling you get from a word, what comes to mind) if you feel that the word you are replacing doesn't match the tone that you are presenting.
