A store is having a sale on jelly beans and almonds. For 6 pounds of jelly beans and 2 pounds of almonds, the total cost is $12 . For 3 pounds of jelly beans and 5 pounds of almonds, the total cost is $15 . Find the cost for each pound of jelly beans and each pound of almonds.

Solution:

Let each pond of  jelly beans cost $x.

and each pond of almonds cost $y.

Then we can write

[tex]6x+2y=12.......(i)[/tex]

[tex]3x+5y=15.....(ii)[/tex]

Now solve these two equations together using substitution we get

[tex]3x=15-5y[/tex]

[tex]30-10y+2y=12\\ \\ -8y=12-30\\ \\ -8y=-18\\ \\ y=2.25\\ \\ 3x=15-5y=15-5*2.25=3.75\\ \\ x=1.25[/tex]

Hence each pond of jelly bean cost 1.25$

Each pond of almond costs 2.25$
