1 and 1 third on the positive side of the line because it's two negatives.

Answer: -2

We are subtracting two negatives, so we can think of it as adding the positive versions of the numbers and then making the final result negative. So we're adding 1/3 to 1 & 2/3. I like to think of it as slicing up a pie when it comes to fractions. Each pie will have 3 slices total. The 1/3 means we have 1 slice out of 3 total. Then the "1 & 2/3" means we have 1 whole pie (aka 3 slices) plus 2 slices out of 3 from another pie. In total we have (1 slice) + (3 slices) + (2 slices) = 6 slices giving 6/3 = 2 whole pies. This 2 is turned negative from the rule mentioned earlier. This is why the answer is -2.
