Taken literally the fraction means 5 ÷ 100. This can be inserted into the calculator to give 0.05.

If your teacher would prefer you to not use a calculator for this question, think of the rule for multiplying or dividing by 10. The place value of the original number just shifts. This principle applies for 100 as well, just that the place value of the number shifts by two places.

E.g. 26 × 100 = 2600 (place value increases by two places- or "add two zeros")

E.g. 26 ÷ 100 = 0.26 (place value decreases by two places: the six was moved from the units place down to the tenths (first move), then it was moved to the hundreths. The 2 was moved from the tens to the units (first move), then to the tenths.

Therefore when dividing 5 by 100, it is moved from the units to the tenths, then to the hundreths place to leave 0.05.
