Suppose there are 12 equal parts of the house to be cleaned. Max can do 1 per hour, and Maggie can do 3 per hour.

The number of units they can do together in x hours is x+3x. Since there are 12 units to do, x+3x=12. For x=3 this is true, so the sister was right!
