A metaphor is taking something and making it more dramatic than it is. Here's an example: Your heart is stone cold. You see, his heart is not actually stone cold. He's just making it seem more than it actually is. Same with this. He's not actually sounding a barbaric yawp. That's exaggeration. He's really just yelling loudly. They use metaphores because a barbaric yawp sounds way better than yelling loudly.
