A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently half-slave and half-free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.

What was Lincoln's position in 1858?

By 1858, Lincoln had established himself as the most prominent leader of the nascent Republican Party in Illinois, and he was the obvious choice to run against Douglas. In June, Lincoln launched his campaign in earnest with a speech in Springfield in which he famously said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand...this government cannot exist, perpetually half slave and half free."

Between August and October 1858, Lincoln and Douglas debated in seven separate congressional districts across the state. During the Senate campaign, they drove over 4,000 miles.
