This sentence means that the war of 1812 guaranteed the survival of the United States as a nation by securing respect from the powers of Europe. Without victory in this war, there would have been attempts to recolonize the United States by Britain and other European powers.

This sentence means that the United Stated could not have recived terratory because of the Ghent treaty and the U.S unablity to defend itself against britan.The nations of Europe started respecting the rights of the United States. After the war, the United States expanded west without facing extreme military opposition from American Indians.
