Which best explains why India is suffering from widespread poverty, even though it has a rapidly growing economy? Its population is also growing rapidly. It has no way to distribute available food. It has a shortage of healthy and able workers. Its government has no ability to treat sick people.

Currently in the world there are about 1000 million children living in poverty; and some 600 million in extreme poverty. According to the latest published reports, it is estimated that around 30% live in India. Despite recent advances in human development, in this country many children continue to suffer from malnutrition, health deficiencies, labor exploitation and a high rate of infant mortality due to poverty.

According to one of the latest reports on this topic, the "Ending Extreme Poverty: A Focus on Children", published in 2016 by the World Bank Group and UNICEF, in 2013 the number of children living in a situation of extreme poverty (with less than $ 1.90 per day) in India exceeded 115.5 million, which is about 30% of the 385 million children who lived in extremely poor households during that same year.

Although in the last decade, India has made progress in the fight against poverty - and some 270 million people have escaped poverty - many reports from Non-Governmental Organizations warn that the prevalence of this problem is still very high, especially for children, which is the most disadvantaged sector of the population.
