The Appalachian Mountains created a fall line in Georgia. It is thought that most of Georgia was covered in ocean. Millions of years later as the water receded, the rivers flowing from the mountains and flowing to the ocean created ways for people to get to and from the ocean by waterways. This travel the created commerce and trade, up and down the rivers by boat. Trade post formed up and down the rivers. In Georgia where travel inland was possible those furthest inland points eventually became larger well-populated cities.
