Abner Doubleday did not invent baseball. The myth started when the Mills Convention wanted to determine the true origin of the sport. They placed ads in papers asking for information and eventually got a response from Abner Graves saying he was there when Doubleday outlined the basics in Cooperstown, New York. This however was found to be false when records showed that Doubleday was not in Cooperstown at the time but at West Point Academy as a cadet. Also that Doubleday, a renowned diarist, made no mention whatsoever to baseball nor claimed to have invented it. Claim now goes to Alexander Cartwright for inventing the game.
I know its not short but hope this helps!
