D) The abolition of slavery
Louisiana struggled much in the Reconstruction years, because there was strong resistance in the state to granting rights to black persons. Blacks were no longer under slavery, but their rights were infringed upon in other ways by a culture not ready to grant them full freedom or equality. See, for example, the Louisiana Black Code of 1865, meant to control blacks as workers in the non-slavery economic environment.
