An antagonist is meant to struggle against the protagonist. He is an obstacle that is, in many stories, meant to overcome. He can also be used as a plot device. Usually, the antagonist is defeated, but in many stories he might get away or even win. Generally, the antagonist will always be presented as a challenge or difficulty that the main characters need to overcome, survive or defeat.
