The Southern Strategy is refereed to as an electoral strategy adopted by the Republican Party in the United States.

Up until 1950s and even 60s, the Democratic party was very strong in the Southern United States.

Richard Nixon along with other leading members of the Republic party sought to change this by playing up the racial tensions between blacks and whites in the Southern States.

With a clear White majority, it was clearly devised to win Southern White voters for the Republic Party.

This was seen as the best way to connect with Southern States, where racism was still rampant and there was hostility towards liberal values.

The strategy proved highly successful when Nixon won the presidency in 1972.

Historically, the Southern Strategy was so successful that even today, the Republic Party has a large base in the region.
