Hyphae are a filamentous vegetative structure of some fungi and a large network of hyphae form a mycelium (vegetative body). Mycelium is actually mass of branched, tubular hyphae. Because of its structure, hyphae enable the fungi structural strength (it is composed of at least one cell encapsulated by a protective cell wall usually made of chitin). The combination of branching hyphae with their radial/diffuse growth is a huge advantage for mycelium that can explore and exploit a large area.  Also, hyphae and their organisation (diffuse or radial growth)  have a role in the absorptive nutrition of the fungi. For example, parasitic fungi have specialized hyphae with tips, haustoria, which penetrate the host organisms or symbiotic fungi that have specialized hyphae, arbuscules, which can be found in the roots of vascular plants.

The advantage of having a multicellular body that consists of fine filaments (hyphae) is that it has the advantage of absorption of food for growth and development.

Multicellular organisms are those organisms that contain more than one cell which are usually specialized for various functions.

Examples of multicellular organisms are:

  • Animals
  • plants and
  • Fungi

The cells of some of these multicellular organisms can specialise to form structures called filaments or hyphae.

These filaments (hyphae) are found in the fungi organisms.

They are used by fungi organisms for absorption of nutrients because they contain digestive enzymes.

Therefore, the multicellular organisms that consists of fine filaments (hyphae) has the advantage of absorption of food for growth and development.
