Ponyboy is full of pride person and he doesn’t want someone to pity him because of his life is rough. Even if she grew up in a strong environment and he encounters worst experiences, he still doesn’t want to have other’s pity. He would rather be hated than to have shown pity. This is because Ponyboy thinks that pity is a form of weakness that’s why he hoped that Bob’s parents hated him and the other greasers.

Ponyboy thinks about Bob's parents, and he wonders what they might think of him. He thinks there are two possible options.

The first option is that they are full of hate because of what Ponyboy and the other greasers did to their son. This would be a natural reaction. However, it could also be that the parents pity Ponyboy and the greasers. They might think of how the boys' attitude is a consequence of the harsh realities that they have had to face in life. Ponyboy hates this idea, as he believes that pity is a more disrespectful and demeaning feeling. He does not want to be pitied, and prefers to be hated.
