Essay Question
The texts that we have examined during the course reflect a variety of experiences (biocentric,
anthropocentric, natural/urban, etc.) that have been influenced by engineers (amongst others)
in various ways.
Critically evaluate the poems Directions (1998) by Billy Collins and Directions (2010) by Inua
Ellams exploring the experiences each persona reflects on in the natural and urban
environment.
You may want to explore the spaces depicted, the effects these have on the wellbeing of the
persona, what they focus on and why, and how these reflect the theories of Deep
Ecology/Ecofeminism/environmental philosophy in general, relating these concerns to the
practice of engineering.
Consider how these types of texts may aid future engineers (like yourselves) develop more
nuanced understandings of the world in which we exist, and offer more creative and
sustainable solutions to humanity’s problems.
Please write in the third person. Remember to keep your writing objective and formal. You
must refer to the poems in your discussion.
