Task description

Cultural safety is crucial in healthcare settings. In Assessment Task Four, you will demonstrate your application of cultural safety in an interview with a peer.

Step 1

Complete the AT4 Template: Prepare an interview guide and justify your guide in terms of the principles of cultural safety (500 words).

Step 2

Video of interview with you in the role of interviewer (7 mins). Submit the video to the AT4 Assessment folder in MyLO.

Step 3

Self assessment (500 words). Complete the AT4 Template: Reflect on and evaluate your experiences and learning about conducting a culturally safe interview

Interview guide and 500 word rationale

In this part of the assessment task, you will write an interview guide. The interview guide will comprise brief questions and/or prompts to support you to be culturally safe during health care interviews. Your interview guide should be a template of questions and/or prompts that could be used for any health care interviews that you undertake. You will test your interview guide in step two of this assessment task.

In addition to your interview guide, you are required to submit a 500-word rationale which explains how your interview guide incorporates the four principles of cultural safety . The goal is to demonstrate that you can apply the principles of cultural safety in practice. You interview guide should demonstrate this.

Interview case study:

Interviewer/Practitioner role: the nurse who initially sees Ling at the clinic, who does not know Ling or his family. Interviewee/Patient role: Ling Ling is a 29-year-old Chinese Australian male, who is not straight and has had multiple partners over the last few years. He recently graduated from post-graduate studies and found a position as a project manager in a prestigious consulting firm. As the only male child in the family, Ling’s parents are very proud of his achievements. Ling’s parents worked hard since they moved to Australia 35 years ago. Ling has been experiencing flu-like symptoms for several weeks. He visited your clinic because he has been having a fever in the past few days. Ling chose this clinic because it is located outside of his community area. He does not want to run into any friends or family members. Ling has not yet disclosed his sexual orientation to his family. He is concerned that his sexual orientation does not meet the traditional values and expectations that his parents have for him. Ling has a cousin, Alice, who is a few years younger than him. Ling confided his secret to Alice a couple of years ago. Alice is born and raised in Australia, and she is accepting of Ling’s lifestyle. Ling’s mother speaks some English, and his father speaks primarily Mandarin Chinese.
