A study was conducted to investigate whether local car mechanics charge women more than men for an alternator repair. The researcher selected randomly one man and one woman from everyone who had used the same mechanic for the same alternator repair. The process was repeated for a total of six selected randomly cars. The repair prices and the differences (Women – Men) are shown in the table.
Car 1 Car 2 Car 3 Car 4 Car 5 Car 6
Women $625 $580 $500 $350 $425 $525
Men $595 $560 $485 $330 $495 $465
Difference $30 $20 $15 $20 −$70 $60
Mean Standard Deviation
Women $500.83 $100.77
Men $488.33 $91.85
Difference $12.50 $43.56
Dotplots of the data and the differences are shown.
A dotplot is shown with title Women and with points at 350, 425, 500, 525, 580, and 625.
A dotplot is shown with the title Men with points at 330, 465, 485, 495, 560, and 595.
A dotplot is shown with the title Difference and with points at negative 70, 15, 20, 20, 30, and 60.
Do the data provide convincing statistical evidence that women pay more than men for the same alternator repair?
