Evaluate the extent to which American foreign policy changed in the period from 1890–1918. In the development of your argument, analyze what changed and what stayed the same from the periods before.
Directions: In your response you should do the following:
1. Thesis: Present a thesis that makes a historically defensible claim and responds to all
parts of the question. The thesis must consist of one or more sentences located at the
bottom of your introduction.
2. Application of Historical Thinking skills: Develop and support an argument applies
historical thinking skills as direct by the question. Ex. Changes and continuities.
Similarities and differences. Compare and contrast etc.
3. Supporting the Argument with Evidence: Utilize specific examples of evidence to fully
and effectively substantiated the stated thesis or relevant argument.
4. Synthesis/Complex Understanding: Extend the argument by explaining the connections
between the argument and one of the following.
a. A development in a different historical period, situation, era or geographical area.
b. A course theme and/or approach to history that is not the focus of the essay
