As a free Black in the South, you had the right to enter the sharecropping system, which could have been a reliable way to make money when crops were sold. However, many Black sharecroppers did not get what was due to them. Why was that?

a) They didn't work hard enough in the field and the landowner took that out of their pay.
b) They couldn't read the contract so they had to agree to whatever the landowner gave them.
c) Many years, a storm or flood would wipe out the crop and therefore their share.
d) They didn't enter into any kind of contract so the landowner wasn't legally bound to pay them.
