Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United state, was born in Virginia on April 13, 1743. After graduation from William and Mary College in 1762, he studied law and was admitted to the bar. His practice was soon very successful, and in 1796 his political career began with his election to the House of Burgesses, in which he served until 1774. Not a brilliant speaker, Jefferson was unparalleled as a writer of laws and resolutions and, as relation with Great Britain deteriorated, he was in demand to draft protest documents.
