Ernest Cline’s novel, “Ready Player One”, uses the virtual reality game OASIS to show how the main character, Wade Watts, escapes reality. The setting is a dystopian future in which most people escape from the challenges of reality and participate in a virtual reality game. Cline introduces the theme of escapism as the virtual reality game OASIS becomes not just a digital game but shows the characters' escape from the real-life world. The author uses archetypes, allegory, and symbolism to show how the character’s relationships and the deeper meaning of the elements in this story convey the character’s hope for escaping reality. I argue that Cline’s storytelling, along with the three main narrative techniques, constructs this escape through virtual reality in his novel “Ready Player One” to show readers the significance of people finding comfort in the digital world.
