Caldecott Award: Each year the Newbery Medal is awarded by the American Library Association for the most distinguished American children's books published the previous year. However, as many persons became concerned that the artists creating picture books for children were as deserving of honor and encouragement as were the authors of children's books, Frederic G. Melcher suggested in 1937 the establishment of a second annual medal. This medal is to be given to the artist who had created the most distinguished picture book of the year and named in honor of the nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph J. Caldecott. The idea for this medal was also accepted enthusiastically by the Section for Library Work with Children of ALA and was approved by the ALA Executive Board.Review the list of Caldecott Award Winners (Focus on the winners only and not the honor books for this assignment.)

Step 1: Review the Caldecott Award Winners https://www.ala.org/ala/alsc/awardsscholarships/literaryawds/caldecottmedal/caldecotthonors/caldecottmedal.htmLinks to an external site.

Step 2: Make a list of the Caldecott Award Winners you have read. This list should be a minimum of 10 books. If you have not read at least 10 Caldecott Winners, then you will need to read more. If you have read more than 10, please list them all.

Step 3: Choose the one book that you feel is your “winner” from those you have read and explain how and why it is your favorite. Make sure the book, illustrator, publication date, and genre are all clear in the post. Then discuss the content and illustration style, techniques, etc., which make this an impressive and important book.
