Read an excerpt from the article. One of the high school students in the camps had an unusual story. Ralph Lazo was not of Japanese descent; he was Mexican American. Lazo was from Los Angeles, where he lived with his father and sister near a neighborhood called Little Tokyo. Many of his friends were Japanese American. When his friends were being relocated and detained, Ralph decided to join them. He later told the Los Angeles Times newspaper, “Internment was immoral. . . . It was wrong, and I couldn’t accept it. . . . These people hadn’t done anything that I hadn’t done except to go to Japanese language school.” So Lazo decided to stick with his friends. –“Stories of Internment” Why did Ralph Lazo go to the Manzanar camp? He was Japanese American and was forced to relocate. He wanted to attend a summer camp with friends from school. He went for training after enlisting in the military during the war. He wanted to support his friends and show that internment was wrong.
