What are some examples of occupational groups who are at increased risk for infection by bloodborne pathogens? (Health professionals, law enforcement officers, mortuary or morgue attendants, firefighters, medical equipment service technicians, barbers, and cosmetologists.) Have students discuss why these individuals are at increased risk and guide them toward the conclusion that such people sometimes encounter other people’s blood during their work. Emphasize that it is important for these workers to take precautions because contamination can be very serious, even life-threatening. In addition to infecting themselves, these workers can spread contamination to patients and colleagues.
