In this exercise you play the role of a police officer for one day. Long Beach Police officers get up to 30 calls to action in a single 12 -hour shift. As we have discussed, police are first-responders and often find themselves in situations that they do not have the full story of when they arrive. This assignment will have you write out what you think the best-case and worst-case outcomes for four typical calls. Remember, your job is to protect and serve the public and arrive home safely to your family at the end of your shift. In each of these scenarios:
A. Imagine and write about the thoughts that would be going through your mind as you travel to the location
B. Imagine and write about the thoughts that would be going through your mid as you survey the situation
C. Imagine and write about the thoughts that would be going through your mind as you begin your response and describe what that response would be
D. Describe a best-case scenario for how this all might work out
E. Describe a worst-case scenario for how this all might work out
Scenario 1: You are working the night shift and get a call saying that there is a group of 6-10 males congregating in the ally. The caller feared that there were drug deals going on. It is nearly 3:00 in the morning when you approach.
Scenario 2: You are waiting at a red light and the minivan next you all of a sudden crosses the intersection before the light turns green. You turn on your lights and use the intercom to tell the van to pull over. You make out that there are at least 5 people in the van, all adults. You run the plate and dispatch tells you that the owner of the vehicle has a warrant out for his arrest.
Scenario 3: About 30 minutes after the local high school lets out you get a call stating that there are some individuals fighting in the street several blocks down the road from the school. You approach and see several males fighting in the street. You also see dozens of students filming the fight on their cell phones.
Scenario 4: Just before your shift ends, you receive a call that there is a pedestrian on the corner who is yelling, threating, cussing at and harassing any and all people who try to walk down the sidewalk. You arrive at the scene and the person looks unclean and unkept, has a brown paper bag in his hand and that person immediately begins to cuss at you.
