EXERCISE 13 Choosing Prepositions
Some prepositions help pinpoint location and time. In the parentheses in each
sentence below, underline every preposition that makes sense in the sentence.
Notice how the meaning changes, depending on which preposition you use.
1. (Before, Until, After, During, In spite of) dinner Lisa noticed a dark blob (in,
on, under, in front of, between, above) the front door.
2. A giant spider was crawling (up, down, around, through) the front door.
3. When she saw the spider, Lisa ran (toward, out, in front of, over, on, under,
near) the door.
4. Her brother hid (under, behind, inside, above, beneath, next to, near, with,
between) the couch.
5. "Boy, these kids are scary!" the spider thought (within, inside, toward, to,
upon, before) himself.
