1. With reference to four examples, each from a different historical period*, discuss the various ways in which art and/or visual culture have engaged with technological and/or scientific developments.
*Please note: “Historical Period” can mean “Baroque,” “Enlightenment,” “Victorian,” etc. or, more generally, “Early 19th Century,” “Mid 19th Century,” “Late 19th Century,” etc.
2. With reference to four examples, each in a different medium (e.g., painting, drawing, sculpture, video, installation, craft, murals, graffiti, or other forms of visual culture etc.), discuss how art and/or visual culture have been mobilized in the service of social change or to raise awareness about a specific social/political issue. Each example should engage with a different social/political issue. Consider, too, the significance of the medium.
3. With reference to four examples, discuss the various ways in which art and/or visual culture have engaged with different events or processes of historical significance (e.g., war, conflict, crises, natural or human-made disasters, etc.).
4. Select four examples that you think best illustrate the following powers: 1. To spark controversy; 2. To communicate the power of leaders; 3. To engage questions of representation; and 4. To generate a strong emotional response.
