Global Connection: Development and Human Population Growth
Part A: Hypothesizing the relationship between development and population growth
How do you think development influences population growth rate? One measure of a nation's level of development is the human development index (HDI). The HDI takes into account several factors, including a nation's healthcare, economics, and education. A more developed nation--with a high HDI score--would have accessible healthcare, a strong economy, and an extensive education system.
Does greater development lead to more or fewer children? Or does a country's development have nothing to do with its population growth rate?
Choose one of the following graphs to represent your hypothesis about how a country's population growth rate is related to its level of development. (Note that all answers will be marked correct at this point.)
