A floor system consists of a 3-in concrete slab supported by continuous T beams with 28 ft span, 48 in on
center.
Effective depth, d = 20 in for positive and negative moments
Steel strength, fy =60 ksi
Concrete strength, f’c = 3.0 ksi
Factored negative moment, Mu = −12,800 in-kips
Factored positive moment, Mu = 6,400 in-kips
Need to show your design checks by hand calculations. You may use the spreadsheet for guessing the first try.
(a) Determine the tension steel (top reinforcement) and web width (bw) at the supports.
The section must be tension controlled per the code.
The web width must be within 9” to 18” due to the architectural reasons.
You are allowed to make constructability judgment to decide the width.
(b) Determine the tension steel for the positive moment.
(c) Sketch your design clearly.
