Sideburns are patches of hair grown on the sides of a man's face, in front of the ears. The term "sideburns" is a 19th century twist of the original burnsides, named after Ambrose Burnside. Burnside was an American soldier, railroad official, inventor, and public servant from Rhode Island. He served as governor and a U.S. Senator. He was known for his unusual style that connected thick sideburns by way of a mustache but left the chin clean-shaven.
